Patient Education – Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)

Purpose: TRT aims to restore testosterone levels to a healthy range, improving energy, mood, libido, muscle mass, strength, and overall well-being. Success depends on maintaining healthy lifestyle habits and regular monitoring. Lifestyle & Exercise Engage in regular strength and cardio training at least 4–5 days per week Include resistance, aerobic, and flexibility exercises to support muscle, bone, and heart health Stay active throughout the day and avoid prolonged inactivity Nutrition & Hydration Eat a balanced, whole-food diet with lean proteins, healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts), and complex carbohydrates Limit processed foods, refined sugars, and alcohol Stay well hydrated (80–100 oz water daily) Ensure adequate zinc, magnesium, and vitamin D intake Sleep & Stress Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep nightly; maintain consistent sleep/wake times. Manage stress through mindfulness, deep breathing, or relaxation activities to prevent cortisol-related hormone suppression. Cardiovascular & Prostate Health Maintain heart-healthy habits; monitor cholesterol and blood pressure PSA and prostate evaluations recommended during therapy Report chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling, or severe headache promptly Fertility & Testicular Function TRT may reduce natural sperm and testosterone production. Discuss hCG or clomiphene if fertility preservation is desired   Monitoring & Follow-Up Obtain labs every 3 months initially, then every 6–12 months once stable Draw labs 48–72 hrs after most recent injection for accuracy Follow-up via telehealth every 3 months for review and dose adjustment and then every 6 months once desired dose achieved.
